how psychotherapy can help

Calm lake reflecting sky and surrounding trees on a peaceful day.

Psychotherapy can help relieve symptoms of distress but it can also help us to better understand and appreciate ourselves.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy goes beneath the surface.  It aims to reflect, not only on what is happening in the present, but also to explore why we find ourselves repeating patterns.

Through this process we can develop a deeper awareness of ourselves, our relationships and our experiences.

Therapy can be helpful for

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • low self-esteem
  • stress
  • grief and bereavement
  • difficulties in making sense of the past
  • problems in relationships
  • problems at work
  • trauma
  • unhealthy patterns of behaviour
  • feeling lost, stuck or unfulfilled
  • issues around food
  • abuse
  • shame
  • bullying
  • anger issues
  • trouble sleeping and insomnia
  • PTSD and CPTSD

Types of therapy

I offer two types of psychodynamic psychotherapy:

- Open ended psychotherapy

- Time limited psychotherapy

Open-ended psychodynamic psychotherapy provides a regular space in which to meet once or twice a week for therapy on an ongoing basis. We don't decide in advance how many times we meet, though you may have an idea of what you would like before we begin.

In time-limited psychotherapy we work in a more focused way and think psychodynamically about a particular issue or goal, once a week, over 12-weeks. The schedule for these sessions is planned in advance.

When we meet for the initial consultation we will talk about both types of therapy and decide together which we think is most suitable.
